Dear Senator Colburn:

I am writing on behalf of the Maryland Wineries Association to thank you for your support of the small winery self-distribution legislation (SB812/HB1122) during the 2006 session. Please also extend our appreciation to your staff for their support this past season.

While the self-distribution issue facing wineries was deemed contentious by our opposition, your support throughout the session led to a consensus bill that all parties agreed to support. Both bills were passed unanimously in both houses, and Governor Ehrlich signed the emergency bill into law on April 25.

As you know, our industry - while revolving around the production of alcohol - is primarily based in agriculture and tourism. The State of Maryland now realizes tax, tourism and land preservation benefits our industry provides, and has begun to provide much-needed financial and staffing support for research, education and marketing.

We aniticipate your support of our growing industry in the coming years, and hope to see you soon at one of our wineries, festivals or events.
