Sen. Colburn defends his voting record
The Star Democrat
Monday May 8, 2006

A recent ad in The Star Democtat impugned my voting record on our families' values. Here are the facts.

I have a long record of support for the people of the Eastern Shore, their families and Marylanders' economic well-being. I have been a stauch supporter of measures that protect our families' values and promote our society's common good. I have been unwavering in my advocacy for the issues that affect District 37.

In this last legislative session, I sponsored SB 160, which would prohibit human cloning. I supported allowing Maryland voters, not activist judges, define marriage. I sponsored SB 539, which would protect the homeless. I opposed SB 297, which would allow providing emergency contraception to minors on demand. I supported protecting our children from sexual predators with strong penalties, including "Jessica's Law".

I voted against several bills that hurt the Eastern Shore's economy, including the Wal-Mart bill, a bill written by Big Labor to single out one company because it has resisted attempts to unionize its workforce. Unfortunately the Wal-Mart bill is law after Big Labor unions provided thousands of campaign contributions to supportive legislators to override the governor's veto. This bill now threatens countless high-paying jobs in our region.

In the last four years, the General Assembly's Democratic majority has proposed more than $7.5 billion in tax increases.

Committed to the people of the Mid-Shore, I am proud of my record.
