Hillary Spence’s decision to challenge Richard Colburn for the State Senate seat in District 37 is a very encouraging development. Now, with the candidacy of Tim Quinn for the House of Delegates seat held by Jeannie Haddaway Riccio, we have two well-qualified Democrats who are likely to stimulate a long-needed public discussion of the compelling issues facing the Mid-Shore.

The Republican incumbents and their challengers are hard-working and well-intended public servants who deserve to be judged solely on their capabilities and on the positions they set forth. This is, for them, a rare opportunity to show how partisan politics can be a positive force in this time of bitter partisan division. Perhaps we can all rise to this occasion.
