Thomas Frank in his book, Whats The Matter With Kansas, documents how the Republican Party has convinced voters to vote against their own self interest. I thought of that when I attended the budget hearing for Talbot Countys FY 2007 budgget. Speaker after speaker, parents, grandparents, and teachers, gave rational and cogent reasons for fully funding the Talbot County School Board request, including the Lap Top program. What is it that the majority of the Talbot County Council can not understand about the tools that our students need to negotiate the 21st century? Given that the revenues exceed projections and the council is reducing taxes from 2.25 to 1.79 percent and can still maintain a substantial Rainy Day reserve fund is this an elections year ploy? I commend to the Councils consideration the excellent guest commentary that appeared in the May 5 issue of The Star Democrat by Al Silverstein, president and CEO of the Talbot County Chamber of Commerce. DANIEL G. HIGGINS Jr., Claiborne Editors note: Lest anyone draw a wrong conclusion from Mr. Higgins reference to the Republican Party in his opening paragraph, the five-member Talbot County Council has only one Republican councilman. The other four, the majority, are Democrats. |
