United Way praises Sen. Colburn’s efforts
May 14, 2006
Star Democrat

On behalf of the United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore and the thousands of our neighbors who benefit from our efforts, we salute Sen. Rich Colburn for his above and beyond legislative support of “House Bill 1507 — Workplace Giving Campaign.”

Currently, local counties and municipalities have the choice as to the composition of their workplace giving campaigns. However, this bill would have mandated local counties and municipalities in the state to include any and/or all 501c3 charitable organizations in their workplace giving campaigns. This mandate would greatly affect the possibility of keeping dollars in the local community to provide critical help and hope to our local neighbors in need.

Sen. Colburn’s successful efforts to kill the entire bill were beyond all expectations. His leadership and determination to help our community has helped United Ways across Maryland keep local dollars in local communities. Locally, this means he has helped our United Way provide critical funding for Meals on Wheels, disaster services provided by the Red Cross and hospice care for those on the Shore who are uninsured — to name just three of the 41 programs we currently fund.

Our community and our United Way are indeed fortunate to have a senator like Rich Colburn who is responsive and will work tirelessly to represent our community’s best interest!
